ForCheshireWest Fund: Empowering Communities Across Cheshire West and Chester

The ForCheshireWest Fund is playing a transformative role in strengthening communities across Cheshire West and Chester by providing essential support to local grassroots organisations. The fund focuses on tackling key issues such as health and wellbeing, education and employment, safe communities, and neighbourhood improvements, with a vision to empower people of all ages to improve lives and build thriving communities.

Supporting Local Causes

Since its inception, the ForCheshireWest Fund has prioritised projects that foster sustainable, self-reliant communities. Through grants, the fund enables organisations to directly address the drivers of poverty and improve community well-being. In 2023 alone, over £100,000 was distributed across a diverse range of projects, benefiting thousands of residents.

For example, the Over 55’s Shurlach Afternoon Club received a £600 grant to provide a social hub for isolated older adults in Northwich. The funding enabled the group to host affordable day trips and entertainment, significantly helping to combat loneliness among elderly residents. One attendee shared how joining the club after losing a loved one helped them regain a sense of purpose, describing the club as “a new family” and a vital lifeline during challenging times.

Tackling Poverty and Debt

Another standout project supported by the ForCheshireWest Fund is Pennysmart CIC, which received a £12,500 grant to offer money advice and casework support to vulnerable households. Working in partnership with local housing associations and community organisations, Pennysmart helps residents manage debt, access entitlements, and regain control of their finances. The service has had a significant impact, with 136 households receiving crucial support and an average client seeing a £2,801 improvement in their financial situation.

Youth Empowerment

The fund is also investing in the next generation. The Youth Federation’s Better Start programme, which received £10,000, has helped disengaged young people in Northwich develop life skills and improve their mental health. Out of 31 participants, 7 secured full time employment and 3 returned to full time education. One parent shared how the programme transformed their son’s life, enabling him to become more independent after the loss of his father.

Making a Lasting Impact

With a focus on long-term, sustainable outcomes, the ForCheshireWest Fund is driving positive change in the region. From enhancing social inclusion to addressing financial hardship, the fund is a beacon of hope for Cheshire West’s most vulnerable residents.

Cheshire Community Foundation aims to continue building on this success in the coming years, with plans to raise £1.5 million to expand its grant-making activities and support even more local projects.
