Cheshire Community Foundation achieves Triple A in the Foundation Practice Rating

We are thrilled to announce that Cheshire Community Foundation has been awarded a Triple A rating in Year Five of the Foundation Practice Rating. We achieved an A grade in each of the three domains of diversity, accountability and transparency, and an A grade overall. We are one of only three foundations in the entire country to achieve this.

This year’s Foundation Practice Rating results are the strongest in the initiative’s five-year history, showing significant improvements in diversity, accountability and transparency practices across the UK grant-making sector.

When a life is short, every moment is precious and it is important that these children and their families are given the chance to thrive, have fun and make memories to treasure while they can. The Hope House environment is tailored for their special needs, and the programme of activities and events the community foundation has funded creates opportunities for them to experience quality moments together, safe in the knowledge that their team of professionals, who are familiar with the needs of each family, are at hand to provide extra support when needed. They to reduce the isolation faced by families, who tell us it's a lifeline to them.

Growing skills, confidence and futures with Cre8

When a 15 year old referred to Cre8 arrived for his first day of gardening work, he was struggling in school, vulnerable and unsure of his direction. Youth workers bought him work clothes and safety boots and took him to a job clearing leaves from a pond. By the end of the day, the feedback from the team leader was simple. He had worked hard, stayed positive and done well. The young person’s own verdict was just as clear. He loved it. For him, being outside, active and trusted with real responsibility was the right starting point. 

First steps on the employment ladder

Stories from the programme show how practical work can shift confidence and direction. One young person, previously not in education, employment or training, spent seven months working regularly with Cre8. He learned to use a lawnmower and strimmer, built trust with his team leader and began to take pride in his work. Over time his behaviour improved, he re-engaged with support services and reduced the trouble he was getting into. 

Another young person moved from Cre8’s Christmas tree enterprise into cleaning contracts and then on to a job at a national retailer. Cre8 provided his first opportunity to work and the confidence to take the next step. Others have gone on to work for themselves, using the skills they developed. 

Not every journey is straightforward, but the relationships built continue beyond the practical sessions, with youth workers remaining a consistent presence in young people’s lives.

Skills for work and life

All participants learned about health and safety and safe working practices. Most gained hands on experience using gardening equipment, while some learned basic engine repairs or developed customer facing skills through enterprise activities.

For some, this was their first experience of formal employment. Young people learned how to apply for jobs, gather references and attend interviews. Two opened bank accounts so they could be paid. Alongside practical learning, mentoring conversations helped young people talk through challenges in their lives. One described the work as being very positive for his mental health. 

Visible change in the community

The work carried out made a clear difference locally. Overgrown and difficult gardens were cleared and restored for vulnerable tenants, and communal green spaces were maintained for community use. These before and after photos from the project show dramatic transformations, giving young people a tangible sense of achievement and pride in their contribution.

Partners including Peaks and Plains Housing Trust highlighted the positive impact on residents and the quality of the work completed.

The difference your funding made

Funding enabled Cre8 to expand its practical gardening work, invest in equipment and provide the staff time needed for intensive, relationship based youth work. It helped strengthen the organisation’s social enterprise model, creating more sustainable opportunities for young people to gain work experience and paid employment.

By combining paid work, skill building and mentoring, the project supported vulnerable young people to see new possibilities for themselves and begin building more stable futures.
