Cheshire Community Foundation awarded Johnathan Barker a £1,922 grant through the SWEF Fund to support the growth of his vehicle valeting and detailing business, JLB Valets. Now, the funding has helped him expand his skills, diversify his services and strengthen the foundations of his growing business.
Based in Northwich, JLB Valets provides professional vehicle valeting and detailing services for a wide range of customers. Jonny launched the business after investing significant personal time and money into equipment, transport and marketing, building on his self-taught expertise in vehicle cleaning and detailing.
Before applying for the grant, Jonny had already invested over £7,000 of his own funds into the business, including a work vehicle, equipment and promotional materials. His market research identified strong local demand for mobile vehicle valeting services, with regular requests appearing on community social media groups and limited specialist providers operating in the area.
The business was established with a simple goal: to provide high-quality, affordable valeting and detailing services for everyday vehicle owners, whilst building a reputation through excellent customer service and recommendations.
How the grant helped:
The £1,922 grant enabled Jonny to invest in equipment and training that would help him grow beyond basic valeting services. A significant portion of the funding was used to complete a professional machine polishing course, allowing him to develop new skills and offer additional detailing services to customers. The grant also supported the purchase of equipment that enhanced the professionalism and flexibility of the business, helping him to operate more effectively as a fully mobile service.
Jonny explained, "The grant has enabled me to further my knowledge and skills, leading to better quality results for customers, as well as being able to provide additional services alongside valeting."
The investment has continued to deliver benefits beyond the original purchases. Since completing the training, Jonny has reinvested earnings back into the business to undertake further courses and continue developing his expertise.
Challenges along the way:
Like many small business owners, Jonny has faced a range of challenges while growing the business. One of the biggest obstacles is the weather, which can directly affect whether work can be carried out on any given day. As a mobile operator, poor weather can disrupt bookings and reduce productivity.
Competition has also increased considerably with approximately ten additional valeting businesses starting up in the area. Alongside this, managing customer expectations and maintaining high service standards remains an ongoing challenge.
Despite these pressures, Jonny has continued to build his customer base and strengthen his reputation through quality workmanship and ongoing investment in his skills.
Plans for Growth
Looking ahead, Jonny's ambition is to take the business to the next level by securing dedicated premises. He is currently exploring the possibility of renting a unit that would allow work to continue regardless of weather conditions, whilst also creating the opportunity to offer higher-end detailing services that require a controlled environment.
As demand grows, he also hopes to create employment opportunities by bringing an additional team member into the business. These developments would allow JLB Valets to expand its service offering, increase capacity and continue building a strong local customer base.
What the grant meant
The grant has had a significant impact on both the business and Jonny's personal life; by enabling him to broaden his services and increase the quality of his work, the funding has helped create a stronger platform for future growth. The additional income generated has allowed him to continue reinvesting in the business whilst improving his work-life balance.
Reflecting on the experience, Jonny said: "The grant has massively helped my business. I've been able to provide a fully mobile service and attend a course to provide additional services. Since then I have also been able to reinvest into the business by attending further courses and upskilling."
The business has also given him something equally valuable: more time with his family. "The business and the grant have helped me be at home more and be able to watch my little girl grow up." Jonny has also been able to buy his dream classic car!
JLB Valets continues to grow, demonstrating how targeted early-stage funding can help ambitious entrepreneurs develop new skills, expand their services and build sustainable local businesses.
